Sweet shops in Berhampur raided ahead of Diwali; Rs 1 lakh fine collected

Berhampur (19/10/2025): Ahead of Diwali celebrations, the Food Safety Team of the Berhampur Municipal Corporation conducted extensive raids on several sweet shops across the city on Sunday. The inspections aimed to ensure food quality and hygiene standards during the festive season. Fines amounting to over Rs 1 lakh were imposed on multiple outlets for violating hygiene and safety norms.

Officials stated that the action was taken to prevent the sale of substandard or unsafe food items ahead of the festival. More than 50 sweet shops across Berhampur were inspected during the drive.

Shop owners were instructed to maintain cleanliness and sell only quality food products to customers. Authorities emphasised that ensuring food safety and hygiene is crucial, especially during the festive period when demand for sweets increases sharply. The operation was jointly carried out by the Food Safety and Enforcement Teams of the Berhampur Municipal Corporation.

Officials further informed that similar inspections will continue in the coming days to ensure strict compliance with food safety regulations across the city.
