Odisha showcases Maritime Heritage through Sand Art at India Maritime Week; PM Modi appreciates artwork

Bhubaneswar(29/10/2025): Odisha’s glorious maritime heritage found a creative expression at the India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai, where renowned sand artist Padmashri Sudarsan Pattanaik presented an impressive sand art installation on behalf of the Commerce & Transport Department, Government of Odisha. Padmashri Pattanaik had the proud and memorable opportunity to meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji, who greeted him warmly with “Jai Jagannath” — a gesture that beautifully echoed the spiritual and cultural identity of Odisha. The artist presented to the Prime Minister his sand art inspired by Bali Jatra — a tribute to Odisha’s ancient maritime legacy and historic trade links with Indonesia.
He also shared the significance of Kartik Purnima, the sacred day when seafarers from ancient Odisha set sail on overseas voyages symbolising courage, devotion, and exploration. The PM appreciated the artwork and its profound depiction of India’s maritime heritage.
The large installation, measuring 30 feet in length and 10 feet in width, was created at the Odisha Pavilion during the event to celebrate the enduring bond between oceans and civilization. “It was a distinct honour to represent my State and the Commerce & Transport Department at this prestigious event.
Sand art is a timeless medium that connects our glorious past with the aspirations of a resurgent maritime India,” said Padmasri Sudarshan Pattanaik.
